PSU Buying Guide for 2025 (India): Wattage, Quality, and What to Avoid

By PartsRadar โ€ข 2025-12-23 โ€ข 6 min read

A PSU can make or break your build. Learn how to choose wattage, efficiency, protections, connectors (12VHPWR/ATX 3.0), and reliable options in India.

Updated: Dec 2025
Goal: Choose a stable PSU that protects your GPU/CPU and supports upgrades

Why the PSU matters (more than you think)

Your power supply is the foundation of stability. A poor PSU can cause random crashes, instability under load, and in worst cases damage other components. In India, heat + inconsistent mains make PSU quality even more important.

Step 1: Pick the right wattage

Estimate total system draw (CPU + GPU + rest) and add 20โ€“30% headroom for stability and upgrades.

  • Office / iGPU builds: 450W quality PSU
  • Midrange GPUs (RTX 4060 / RX 7600): 550โ€“650W
  • Upper-mid GPUs (RX 7800 XT / RTX 4070): 650โ€“750W
  • High-end GPUs: 850W+ depending on the model and OC

Tip: A PSU is most efficient and stable when not running near 100% load.

Step 2: Understand 80+ ratings (Bronze vs Gold)

80+ is an efficiency rating, not a full quality guarantee โ€” but many Gold units also use better components. For most gaming PCs in India:

  • Bronze: Minimum recommended
  • Gold: Ideal if budget allows

Step 3: ATX 3.0 / PCIe 5.0 and 12VHPWR

Newer NVIDIA GPUs may use the 12VHPWR connector. If you plan to buy/upgrade to those, consider an ATX 3.0 PSU with native 12VHPWR cable.

Avoid: Cheap adapters and unknown cables. If you must use an adapter, ensure it is fully seated and not bent sharply near the connector.

Step 4: Modular vs non-modular

  • Non-modular: Cheapest, more cable clutter
  • Semi-modular: Best value for most builds
  • Fully modular: Cleanest build; usually higher tier

What to avoid (India reality check)

Avoid ultra-cheap โ€œ700W gaming PSUโ€ units with no credible reviews. Prefer models with protections: OCP, OVP, UVP, OTP, SCP. A PSU failure can cost far more than what you saved.

Buying tips in India

  • Compare prices on Amazon/Flipkart + specialist stores (PrimeABGB, MDComputers, Vedant, etc.).
  • Festive windows (Oct) and clearance windows (Decโ€“Jan) can have strong PSU discounts.
  • Prefer authorized sellers for easy warranty.
